Linguists, scholars, researchers, educators, and students gathered at ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳-IIT on April 27 – 29 for the 5thLinguistics Society of the Philippines International Conference, a collaboration of LSP, the Department of English and the Department of Filipino and Other Languages. This year’s conference theme is “Decentering, Decolonizing, and Deconstructing Languages in New Paradigms and Discourses.”
The conference aimed to create a platform where language research practices can be shared and to showcase methodologies that challenge how knowledge is obtained, presented and disseminated.
David Eberhard, current Ethnologue General Editor and Senior Sociolinguistics Consultant, SILInternational, gave the opening keynote speech. Plenary speakers included Kornwipa Poonpon (Khon Kaen University), Steven Patrick ‘Tibo’ Fernandez (ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳-IIT), and James McLellan (Universiti Brunei Darussalam). The closing keynote speech was given by the AILA (Association Internationale de Linguistique Appliquée)President, Azirah Hashim.
The three-day event featured keynote speeches, plenary sessions, paper presentations, and panel discussions covering a wide range of topics related to the conference theme. These topics included among others language development, language documentation, corpus linguistics, translanguaging, stylistics, discourse analysis, grammatical analysis of Philippine languages, multilingualism, culture studies, neologism and register, crisis communication, language and peace, and languaging power and politics.
The LSP is a professional organization that aims to promote and advance the study and practice of linguistics in the Philippines. The organization has been conducting conferences, seminars, and other activities since its establishment.
With the international conference, the LSP and the Departments of English and Filipino and Other Languages of ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳-IIT hope to contribute to the ongoing efforts to promote linguistic diversity, equity, and inclusion and to generate new knowledge and insights.
