ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳-IIT, through the efforts of the Center for Language Studies (CLaS) in partnership with the Mindanao Heritage and Indigenous Research Center and the College of Arts and Social Sciences with its Department of English and Department of Filipino and Other Languages, honored the late Dr. Maridette Molina, a linguistics professor from the Department of English, by dedicating a posthumous lecture series titled, “Maridette Molina Lectures in Linguistics” on April 17, 2024, at the ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳-IIT Mini-Theater. The event was attended by students from ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳-IIT, ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳-Marawi and some invited colleges in Iligan City.
Dr. Molina or “Ma’am Detdet” to her friends in the University passed on during the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak but her legacies and desire to propagate research on Philippine languages continue to resound within ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳-IIT. Dr. Danilyn Abingosa, CLaS Director who is also Dr. Molina’s good friend shared in her speech a conversation that they had where Dr. Molina expressed her vision for ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳-IIT to establish a Language Center.
“Bagamán hindi naabutan ni Ma’am Det ang pagkakatatag ng ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳-IIT Center for Language Studies, alam kong masaya siya ngayon dahil natupad ang isa sa mga pinangarap na proyekto niya noon,” Dr. Abingosa said.
The lecture was made more significant as it was done on her birthday and had Dr. Aldrin Lee of the University of the Philippines Diliman, her thesis adviser, as the speaker who had the talk, “A Grammar Sketch Outline Tailored for Philippine Languages: What Questions to Ask.”
During the afternoon session, panel discussions took place and had the central theme, “Challenges to Language Documentation and Description: Mindanao Setting” with the panel discussants Asst. Prof. Zinab B. Barataman, Asst. Prof. Noronsalam D. Bandrang, Assoc. Prof. Honeylet Dumoran, and Dr. Abingosa.
According to Dr. Abingosa, the “Maridette Molina Lectures in Linguistics” is now integrated into the calendar of annual activities of the CLaS and will always fall on the birth month of Dr. Molina.
