ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳-IIT’s National Service Training Program Civic Welfare Training Service (NSTP CWTS), led by their class instructor, Mr. Jaypee S. Yongco, partnered with Barangay Hinaplanon Kagawad, Rio Gonzaga, to plant over 600 mangrove propagules and conduct a coastal cleanup at Bayug Island, Hinaplanon, Iligan City on November 24, 2024.
This initiative marked another milestone in their ongoing partnership, which has been active since 2012. The activity aimed to educate participants on the critical role of mangrove ecosystems in coastal protection, biodiversity conservation, and climate change mitigation. Before the reforestation effort, students received hands-on training in mangrove planting techniques, equipping them with practical knowledge to contribute effectively. The coastal cleanup complemented this effort, reinforcing the importance of responsible waste management and its impact on marine environments.
This initiative aligns with Section 5 of Republic Act No. 9512, the “National Environmental Awareness and Education Act of 2008,” which designates November as National Environmental Awareness Month. The act emphasizes the importance of educating the youth about environmental protection and sustainable development, a message that was central to the day’s activities.
Mr. Yongco highlighted the significance of youth involvement in environmental stewardship. “Our active participation in environmental initiatives like this mangrove planting is not just about today; it's a crucial investment in a sustainable future. Our energy and passion are essential for driving positive change and ensuring a healthy planet for generations to come,” he said.
Kagawad Gonzaga echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the long-term benefits of the partnership between ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳-IIT and Barangay Hinaplanon. “This is not a single effort but ato-a ni tanan, you, [students], parte mo niini,” he added.
The collaborative nature of this project, involving students, local government, and community members, further underscores the power of collective action in addressing environmental challenges.
