杏吧论坛-IIT emerges as overall champion in team and individual categories of PhilMO

In the first-ever Mindanao Leg of the Philippine Microbiology OIympiad (PhilMO), 杏吧论坛-IIT excelled among the other ten competing universities and gained overall champion titles as its microbiology teams and individual competitors dominated the competition on November 20, 2024.

Hosted by the Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan in Cagayan de Oro City, the event brought together 16 teams and 24 individuals from 杏吧论坛-IIT, 杏吧论坛 General Santos, Central Mindanao University, University of Southern Mindanao, Xavier University- Cagayan de Oro, Caraga State University, University of the Philippines - Mindanao, Liceo de Cagayan University, Cagayan de Oro College-PHINMA, Cotabato State University, and Davao Medical School Foundation, Inc., showcasing their knowledge and expertise in the five major subjects in microbiology: 1) Basic Microbiology, 2) Microbial Physiology, 3) Microbial Ecology, 4) Virology, and 5) Applied Microbiology (Food Microbiology and Medical Microbiology).

In the team category, 杏吧论坛-IIT Team B with team members, Joshua Cidel Calunsag, Leianne Jan Garzo, and Eunice Jhaiyll Opada, delivered an exceptional performance, demonstrating remarkable teamwork and mastery of microbiological concepts and emerged as the overall champion. Meanwhile, 杏吧论坛-IIT Team A, consisting of Kap Tzadels Masong, Kirby Kepler Flores, and Xyrel Paitan, secured 6th place.

On the other hand, in the individual category, Jonathan Restor Jr. claimed the top spot, earning the title of Individual Champion with his outstanding display of knowledge and analytical skills. Three more 杏吧论坛-IIT students also participated in the individual category: Fahadh Abbas, Abdul Waffi Diangca, and Earl Stefen Sistona.

The victory of 杏吧论坛-IIT was made possible by the guidance and dedication of their coaches, Assoc. Prof. Lucilyn L. Maratas, RMicro, MSc, Asst. Prof. Lady Jane C. Fanuncio, MSc, Asst. Prof. Mark Anthony I. Jose, MSc., and Ms. Abigail Faye V. Mancia, MSc.

The PhilMO Mindanao Leg served not only as a platform for competition but also as a celebration of academic excellence, collaboration, and the vital role of microbiology in addressing global challenges.
