Adding to the growing roster of Professor Emiriti at ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳-IIT, Prof. Sergio R. Canoy, Jr. from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics - College of Science and Mathematics, was conferred with the prestigious Professor Emeritus title, yesterday, October 2, 2024, at the PRISM Lecture Hall.

Attending the investiture of Dr. Canoy were the Officer-in-Charge of the University– Vice-Chancellor for Public Affairs, Dr. Nancy Echavez, the Vice-Chancellors, CSM faculty, students, staff, and the honoree’s family members.

The Professor Emeritus title is awarded to faculty members who have contributed significantly to the University and have reached retirement in their academic careers. According to Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Dr. Pamela Resurrecion, in the presentation of the rationale, the title allows for an individual to be given certain privileges such as being able to continue to teach, apply for research grants, participate in conferences, and contribute to the University’s academic mission.

Dr. Canoy has dedicated 40 years of service to the institute. CSM Dean, Dr. Jan Mickelle Maratas, described Dr. Canoy in his opening remarks as someone who excels in instruction, research, extension, and administration. Dr. Canoy throughout his career has been given various awards and recognitions.

Among his notable achievements, according to Dr. Maratas, were the Outstanding Young Scientist of the Philippines by the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) in 1999, the CHED REPUBLICA Award in 2009, and winning the NAST Outstanding Scientific Paper Award in 2001 and 2003. He was also awarded the Institute Faculty Award in 2016, 2018, and 2019. He proceeded to mention the administrators, mentors, colleagues, students, and family who helped and inspired him.

“As I step into this new role, I look forward to continuing my involvement in mentoring young scholars and other scientific activities in ways that support ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳-IIT,” Dr. Canoy concluded.
