In celebration of this year’s National Women’s Month and International Women’s Day with the theme “Lipunang patas sa Bagong Pilipinas: Kakayahan ng Kababaihan, Patutunayan!’ the College of Health Sciences (CHS) of the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳-IIT) in cooperation with Iligan City’s LGU-CSWD conducted a Lecture-Discussion on Access to Sexual and Reproductive Health Education and Services on March 22, 2024 at the CHS Conference Hall, ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳-IIT.
Part of activities were to honor women during the National Women’s Month Celebration and is the first-ever lecture-discussion conducted about the topic for persons with disabilities (PWDs). It had Dr. Stacey Marianne A. Principe, RN of the DOH as resource speaker, along with guest speakers Ms. Charina L. Haynes from the School for the Deaf in Iligan who acted as the sign language interpreter, Mr. Rizaldy Y. Mocorro, PWD Federation President, Iligan City Chapter, and City Councilor Attorney Marlene L. Young.
The successful event was conducted as part of CHS’ implementation of the extension program entitled Hinabang, Opportunidad, Paglaum and Edukasyon (H.O.P.E.) Sustainable Community Outreach Program for the PWDs in Iligan City for January 2024 to December 2024 upon the recommendation of the ÐÓ°ÉÂÛ̳-IITs Office of the Vice Chancellor for Public Affairs with Associate Professor Gloria Shiela E. Coyoca as Program Leader.
The program will have the following series of projects, Project I: LIHOK KO Project (Physically impaired persons) headed by Assoc. Prof. Roselyn M. Butalid, Project II: NADUNGGAN KO Project (Hearing and speech impaired persons) by Assistant Professor Reya T. Seno, and Project III: KAHAYAG KO Project (Visually impaired persons) by Assoc. Prof. Mae-Lanie O. Poblete.
The affair was officially opened with a speech by CHS Dean Assoc. Prof. Abdullah Junior S. Mangarun, and was attended by a good number of PWDs of different ages from Iligan City, CHS Faculty, students, and other guests.
