The Department of Physical Education (DPE) of the College of Education (CED) revisited the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Iligan to celebrate the 30th National Correctional Consciousness Week (NACOCOW) alongside Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) on Thursday, October 24, 2024.

This year’s NACOCOW theme, “Makataong Pakikitungo, Matinong Pamumuno at Matatag na Prinsipyo Tungo sa Maunlad na Serbisyong Pampiitan,” aims to foster awareness among the public and private sectors about the commitment, leadership, and dedication of the BJMP in building positive relationships and promoting humane treatment of PDLs.

The DPE returned to BJMP Iligan to organize and conduct a Volleyball Friendship Game, which saw active participation from DPE faculty, BJMP officers, and PDLs. Participants were divided into mixed teams, making the game exciting for everyone. The game started at 1:00 pm and ended at 5:00 pm.

Dr. Chiedel Joan G. San Diego, Chairperson of the DPE, emphasized the significance of the event in the context of the university’s “Behind the Bars” extension program. She said, “We are grateful for this unique opportunity to extend our physical education program to PDLs, promoting not only physical wellness but also contributing to their rehabilitation.”

The visit is part of the university’s ongoing efforts to engage with local communities and provide meaningful programs that support the rehabilitation and well-being of PDLs.
