Posted on : November 29, 2008

Roxas City -- President Gloria Macapagal–Arroyo has declared December 1, 2008 (Monday) as a national regular holiday in observance of Andres Bonifacio Day.

The declaration is stipulated in Proclamation No. 1463 signed by President Arroyo to set the regular holidays and special days for the year 2008.

The Dec. 1 holiday aims to enable Filipinos to have a more meaningful observance of 145th birthday of the revolutionary leader and one of the main rebel leaders of the Philippine Revolution against Spanish colonial rule in the late 19th century.

Bonifacio was regarded as the "Father of the Philippine Revolution" and one of the most influential national heroes of the country.

He was the founder of the Katipunan organization which aimed to start an independence movement against Spain.

The Supremo along with his brother Procopio were executed at Mt. Buntis for the crimes of sedition and treason against the revolutionary government of General Emilio Aguinaldo.

Bonifacio is presently depicted in the 10-peso coin, along with fellow patriot Apolinario Mabini. (PIA)
