Abstract | This study would aim to compare the knowledge and use of basic hand hygiene to the number of bacterial growth from the hands of thirty-five subjects from Gregorio T. Lluch Memorial Hospital. A standard questionnaire on hand hygiene practices and knowledge on basic infection control was given to determine their descriptive knowledge on hand hygiene. After so, bacteriological surveillance on the hands of the respondents was made, after observing their adherence to hand hygiene practice. Heterotrophic Plate Count was done to determine the growth of heterotrophs from the hand specimen samples obtained with the use of Nutrient Agar medium. Mannitol Salt Agar and Eosin Methylene Blue Agar were also utilized to assess the pattern of growth of Staphylococcus species and coliforms on both agars. Among the eleven respondent’s (31%) who did hand hygiene, 91% of individuals had positive growth on NA plates while 100% of subjects yielded growths for non-mannitol fermenters and 82% of individuals for Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) on MSA. For EMB plates, no subject rendered positive colonization for (Escherichia coli) E. coli and 82% for Enterobacter. Accordingly, subjects who did not do hand hygiene had positive bacterial growth on NA, MSA and EMB plates. Ninety six percent of respondents who failed to do hand hygiene had positive bacterial growth on NA plates, 100% of individuals had positive non-mannitol fermenters and 79% had obtained S. aureus on MSA PLATES. 71% of subjects had produce Enterobacter while 4% percent or one individual had E. coli growths. None of the respondents was able to answer all five questions and most subjects had a score of three. Overall proficiency of the study population was found to be very poor at 41%. Seventeen percent of the total respondents had correctly stated the hand hygiene procedure making the practice of hand hygiene less efficient. Of the total respondents, ninety-four percent had yielded growth on NA, seventy-seven percent had growth for S.aureus, three-percent had growth for E. coli and seventy-four percent had growths for Enterobacter. However, association between knowledge and number of colonies obtain is not significant. |
