Outcome-Based Education (OBE) Framework

Outcome-Based Education at the College of Engineering

OBE is an educational process which is based on trying to achieve certain specified outcomes in terms of individual student learning. The three components that encompass an outcome-based approach to learning are:

  • an explicit statement of learning intent expressed as outcomes which reflect educational aims, purposes and values;
  • the method or approach to enable the intended learning to be achieved and demonstrated (curriculum, teaching, learning, assessment and support and guidance methods); and
  • criteria for assessing learning which are aligned to the intended outcome.

At the College of Engineering, program outcomes are described in CHED Memorandum Order specific to each academic program. The Vision and Mission Statements of the Institute along with inputs from the various stakeholders also define the different outcomes.

Program Educational Objectives

Program Educational Objectives are broad statements that describe the career and professional accomplishments that the program is preparing graduates to achieve within three to five years after graduation. At College of Engineering, PEOs are specific to each program.

Program Outcomes

Program Outcomes or Student Outcomes are narrower statements that describe what the students are expected to know and be able to do by the time of graduation.These relate to the knowledge (cognitive), skills (psychomotor), and behaviour (affective) that the student acquire through the programme. At the College of Engineering, POs are specific to each program.

Course Outcomes

Course Outcomes (COs) are statements that describe the knowledge or skills the students should acquire by the end of a particular assignment, class, course, or program, and help students understand why that knowledge and those skills will be useful to them. These are elements of Technical or Soft skills that each student must acquire prior to completion of a specific course (i.e. a subject) taught. CO is designed to support and be measureable against PO. CO is very specific to each individual course.
